Clemmensen helps Panthers pull out shootout win
GLENDALE: Michael Frolik scored in regulation and the fifth round of a shootout, and backup goalie Scott Clemmensen stopped 40 shots to lift the Florida Panthers to a 2-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes Saturday night.
Frolik scored in the second period, then squeezed a shot between the pads of Ilya Bryzgalov in the shootout after Clemmensen stopped Lauri Korpikoski at the other end. Clemmensen stopped two other shots in the shootout in his first start in place of Tomas Vokoun this season to help Florida pull out a tough win after losing five of its previous six.
Martin Hanzal scored his seventh goal in regulation and Bryzgalov made 36 saves, but Phoenix failed to score on its final two chances in the shootout for its third loss in four games.
Clemmensen did his best to keep this one close against a flurry of good chances early by Phoenix. He stuffed Taylor Pyatt's one-timer from just outside the crease in the opening minutes and made several other close-range saves in the first period. He also stopped a 2-on1 breakaway by Keith Yandle on a short-handed chance in overtime. -Ap
