Awareness drive about problem of early marriage
HYDERABAD: The Society for Protection of Rights of Child (SPARC), an NGO, has launched five-day campaign from Monday 5th December to 9th December , to create awareness about the problems of the early marriages.
In a meeting at SPARC Hyderabad office here on Tuesday Executive Director of SPARK Pakistan Arshad Mahmood said that there is an urgent need to amend the Child Marriage Restraint Act of 1929.
He said that a private bill has been submitted in the parliament in this regard but as usual the movement on the Bill is extremely slow.
Arshad Mahmood informed that SPARC has launched the campaign simultaneously in all the major cities including Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Karachi and Hyderabad and in 16 districts of the three provinces.
He also informed that a large number of banners will be displayed at important localities, posters, walks, talk shows on radio and television channels and press conference in different cities of the country.
He said that child marriages in Pakistan are a common phenomenon with almost 58 percent prevalence in rural and 27 percent prevalence in urban areas. However, the number of child marriages taking place in Pakistan remains unknown.
