Aware­ness drive about prob­lem of early mar­riage

HYDERABAD: The So­ci­ety for Pro­tec­tion of Rights of Child (SPARC), an NGO, has launched five-day cam­paign from Mon­day 5th De­cem­ber to 9th De­cem­ber , to cre­ate aware­ness about the prob­lems of the early mar­riages.

In a meet­ing at SPARC Hyderabad of­fice here on Tues­day Ex­ec­u­tive Di­rec­tor of SPARK Pak­istan Arshad Mah­mood said that there is an ur­gent need to amend the Child Mar­riage Re­straint Act of 1929.

He said that a pri­vate bill has been sub­mit­ted in the par­lia­ment in this re­gard but as usual the move­ment on the Bill is ex­tremely slow.

Arshad Mah­mood in­formed that SPARC has launched the cam­paign si­mul­ta­ne­ously in all the ma­jor cities in­clud­ing Is­lam­abad, La­hore, Peshawar, Karachi and Hyderabad and in 16 dis­tricts of the three prov­inces.

He also in­formed that a large num­ber of banners will be dis­played at im­por­tant lo­cal­i­ties, posters, walks, talk shows on ra­dio and tele­vi­sion chan­nels and press con­fer­ence in dif­fer­ent cities of the coun­try.

He said that child mar­riages in Pak­istan are a com­mon phe­nom­e­non with al­most 58 per­cent preva­lence in ru­ral and 27 per­cent preva­lence in ur­ban ar­eas. How­ever, the num­ber of child mar­riages tak­ing place in Pak­istan re­mains un­known.
