Rs 3.3b to be spent on agri sec­tor in Sindh, says Sharmila

KARACHI: Govern­ment of Sindh has de­vised a com­pre­hen­sive plan to re­ha­bil­i­tate the agri­cul­ture sec­tor of the prov­ince un­der Rabi As­sis­tance Plan in the flood af­fected ar­eas.

"Sindh prov­ince faced a loss of an es­ti­mated Rs 102 bil­lion due to de­struc­tion caused to 2.23 mil­lion acres of agri­cul­tural land in re­cent floods," said Ad­vi­sor to Chief Min­is­ter on In­for­ma­tion Sharmila Fa­rooqui while ad­dress­ing a press con­fer­ence here on Satur­day.

She said on the di­rec­tive of Pres­i­dent Asif Ali Zar­dari, the govern­ment had is­sued Watan Cards amongst the flood af­fected and now in its sec­ond phase, the govern­ment will launch the rehabilitation of the agri­cul­tural land in co­or­di­na­tion with the Depart­ment of Ir­ri­ga­tion and Agri­cul­ture.

She said that 'de-wa­ter­ing' has al­most been done in af­fected dis­tricts with the pumps and the tar­get will be achieved very soon.

Sharmila said that com­mit­tees have been formed at district and tehsil level to en­sure trans­parency in the dis­tri­bu­tion of fer­til­izer among the af­fected grow­ers.

The com­mit­tees will com­prise DCOs as chair­men while the mem­bers will in­clude EDO Rev­enue, XEN Ir­ri­ga­tion, two rep­re­sen­ta­tives each of cham­bers of Agri­cul­ture and Abadgar Board while the tehsil com­mit­tees will be rep­re­sented by DDO, Mukhtiarkar, DD Agri­cul­ture and oth­ers. -App
