Pak­istan sup­ports Iraq’s ter­ri­to­rial in­tegrity: Gi­lani

IS­LAM­ABAD: Prime Min­is­ter Syed Yusuf Raza Gi­lani Tues­day said Pak­istan fully sup­ports sovereignty, in­de­pen­dence and ter­ri­to­rial in­tegrity of Iraq and wel­comes the agree­ment amongst lead­er­ship of Iraq on form­ing the new govern­ment in the wake of gen­eral elec­tions held in March this year.

He wished ev­ery suc­cess to the Iraqi new govern­ment and the peo­ple and expressed his firm be­lief that a peace­ful, sta­ble and pros­per­ous Iraq would not only ben­e­fit its peo­ple but would also con­trib­ute to­wards the peace and se­cu­rity in the re­gion.

The Prime Min­is­ter was talk­ing to Dr. Rushdi Mah­mood Rasheed, Am­bas­sador of Iraq who called on him in the PM's House this af­ter­noon to de­liver a cheque of US$ 10 mil­lion on be­half of his govern­ment for the rehabilitation and re­con­struc­tion ef­forts of the govern­ment in the flood af­fected ar­eas.

The Prime Min­is­ter con­veyed his pro­found ap­pre­ci­a­tion to the lead­er­ship and peo­ple of Iraq for their gen­er­ous con­tri­bu­tions and stated that this do­na­tion will cer­tainly help mit­i­gate the suf­fer­ings and pains of the flood stricken peo­ple in Pak­istan.

The Prime Min­is­ter while un­der­lin­ing the need for ex­pan­sion and di­ver­si­fi­ca­tion of ex­ist­ing trade and eco­nomic co­op­er­a­tion with Iraq in mul­ti­fac­eted fields said that the concerned stake­hold­ers in Pak­istan like BOI and Min­istry of Com­merce will be asked to in­ter­act with the Am­bas­sador of Iraq to find new ways and means to make progress in these im­por­tant fields.

The Am­bas­sador ex­tended an in­vi­ta­tion to the Prime Min­is­ter on be­half of his govern­ment for his of­fi­cial visit to Iraq in the near fu­ture.

The Prime Min­is­ter ac­cepted the in­vi­ta­tion and stated that the time­frame of the visit would be de­cided through co­or­di­na­tion be­tween the two For­eign Of­fices.

The Am­bas­sador of Iraq lauded the con­tri­bu­tions of Pak­istan's labour force and com­pa­nies in the re­con­struc­tion of war rav­aged ar­eas of Iraq and expressed the hope that a higher num­ber of Pak­istani man­power and firms would par­tic­i­pate in the re­con­struc­tion of in­fra­struc­ture and devel­op­ment of Iraq.

The Prime Min­is­ter wel­comed the pro­posal and as­sured the Am­bas­sador of Pak­istan's full co­op­er­a­tion in the re­gard.

More­over, Prime Min­is­ter Syed Yusuf Raza Gi­lani has re­it­er­ated the com­mit­ment of his govern­ment to take all mea­sures to erad­i­cate cor­rup­tion from the pub­lic in­sti­tu­tions to en­sure good gov­er­nance.

The govern­ment of Pak­istan Peo­ples Party, the Prime Min­is­ter said was try­ing to solve the prob­lems of the peo­ple, by pro­mot­ing the cul­ture of good gov­er­nance. -App
