New gas supply plan for industry to allay anxiety of businessmen: CM
LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that he is thankful to Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani for accepting the stance of Punjab on the issue of loadshedding of gas and announcing that industrial sector of the province will be provided suigas for five days in a week. He said that this decision of the Prime Minister will not only put an end to the conspiracies to weaken the federation but will also allay the misgivings and anxiety of investors and the labourers in the province and thereby avert a crisis.
He was addressing a press conference in Lahore after holding a meeting with Prime Minister in Islamabad. The Chief Minister said that the issue of load shedding of gas had assumed serious proportions in Punjab and a discriminatory attitude was being adopted to the province with regard to supply of gas for the last 15 days.
He said that this situation had brought industrial sector to the verge of disaster as export orders were being cancelled and 15 million workers had been affected. He said that suspension of industrial activities and unemployment of the industrial workers is a big loss to the country. He said that his meeting with t he Prime Minister had been very fruitful and he redressed the grievances of Punjab with regard to supply of gas.
He said that Punjab contributes 60% share in GDP and 80% in textile industry and if the export orders of Punjab were cancelled and t he i ndustries were closed down it would have been very unfortunate.
He said that there cannot be two opinions about the fact that there is a big gap in demand and supply of gas but it is unfair to make any one province bear the brunt of it.
He said that Punjab's industrial requirement of gas is 600\mmcf while it is being given only 180mmcf gas. He said that Petroleum Minister had visited Lahore on his invitation recently and during a meeting with industrial and traders he had announced that a uniform formula will be adopted for the load shedding of gas.
He said that it was a good decision but unfortunately it was not implemented. He said that ECC had also decided that there will be two days' load shedding of gas throughout the country and the federal minister had also agreed with the stance of Punjab with regard to supply of gas.
