Ac­cord for hy­dropower project inked

MIR­PUR: An agree­ment of Rs. 70.43 mil­lion was signed be­tween Wa­ter & Power Devel­op­ment Author­ity ( WAPDA) and Harpo Hy­dropower Con­sul­tants a joint ven­ture of three Pak­istani and a Ger­man firms at WAPDA House late Mon­day for up gra­da­tion of f ea­s­i­bil­ity study of Harpo Hy­dropower Project.

Gen­eral Man­ager (Hy­dro) Plan­ning Maq­sood Shafique Qureshi and NDC Chief Ex­ec­u­tive Of­fi­cer Chaudhry Ghu­lam Hus­sain signed the agree­ment on be­half of WAPDA and the joint ven­ture re­spec­tively.

Fea­si­bil­ity study of the Project was c om­pleted by WAPDA Hy­dro Pl a nning Or­ga­ni­za­tion with the tech­ni­cal col­lab­o­ra­tion of GTZ of Ger­many. KfW of Ger­many is pro­vid­ing grant for up gra­da­tion of fea­si­bil­ity study of the project.

KfW has also com­mit­ted to pro­vide fi­nances for de­tailed en­gi­neer­ing de­sign and con­struc­tion of the project af­ter suc­cess­ful up gra­da­tion of the fea­si­bil­ity study, the sources told APP on Tues­day.

Speak­ing on the oc­ca­sion, Chair­man WAPDA Shakil Dur­rani thanked Ger­many for pro­vid­ing the as­sis­tance, KfW in par­tic­u­lar, for hy­dropower devel­op­ment in Pak­istan. Gen­eral Man­ager (Hy­dro) Plan­ning briefed the par­tic­i­pants of the cer­e­mony that 33MW Harpo Hy­dropower Project is pro­posed to be con­structed on Harpo Nul­lah, a left trib­u­tary of the River In­dus in Rondu area of Skardu.

The project area is lo­cated 75 kms North-West of Skardu town and 670 kms North­East of Is­lam­abad. The project, on its com­ple­tion, is es­ti­mated to gen­er­ate 187 mil­lion units of low-cost elec­tric­ity per an­num. -App
