200 ab­ducted for ran­som in 2010 in KP

PESHAWAR: As year 2010 heads to­wards its con­clu­sion, the pro­vin­cial po­lice have reg­is­tered 200 cases of kid­nap­ping for ran­som with 97 re­port­edly ac­tive kid­nap­per gangs in the pro­vin­cial cap­i­tal.

These groups work ac­cord­ing to a well chalked out plan and have ab­ducted over 200 peo­ple for ran­som in t he out­go­ing year, po­lice sources in­formed.

The ex­act fig­ures of kid­nap­ping are said to be much higher as not all are reg­is­tered with the po­lice.

Giv­ing breakup of these kid­nap­ping groups, the po­lice sources in­formed that 87 groups are op­er­a­tive in Peshawar whereas 10 oth­ers were sup­port­ing these groups.

A to­tal of 34 groups have been re­ported in Charsadda, two in Now­shera, seven in Swabi, 27 in Malakand, eight in Mansehra, four in Batta­gram, 23 in Ko­hat, six each in Hangu and Haripur five in Shangla, seven in Dir Lower, 43 in Bannu and 12 groups in D.I.Khan.

The po­lice f ur­ther i nformed t hat kid­nap­ping groups in Dir were di­rectly linked to ter­ror­ist or­ga­ni­za­tions adding kid­nap­ping for r an­som have be­come profitable busi­ness.

He said that VC Dr. Aj­mal Khan, Dr. In­tikhab Alam, Ex DCO Zain Khan and other peo­ple have been kid­napped for ran­som in the out­go­ing year.

The process of ne­go­ti­a­tions were un­der­way be­tween the govern­ment and the kid­nap­pers, who have de­manded re­lease of 40 mis­cre­ants and Rs.200 mil­lion for the re­lease of Prof. Dr. Aj­mal Khan, they con­fided. More­over, uniden­ti­fied armed men kid­napped a per­son on gun­point in Quetta . Ac­cord­ing to po­lice the gun­men kid­napped a per­son iden­ti­fied as Ab­dul Ghanni Kakar, a busi­ness­man and took him to known place. -App
