Agri­cul­ture sur­vey to ex­plore dy­nam­ics of ru­ral econ­omy

IS­LAM­ABAD: An agri­cul­ture sur­vey has been con­ducted to ex­plore the dy­nam­ics of ru­ral econ­omy and fa­cil­i­tate and en­hance the stake­hold­ers un­der­stand­ing of the ru­ral econ­omy of Sukkur district.

The other pur­pose be­hind this sur­vey was also to en­hance the un­der­stand­ing be­hind low credit ab­sorp­tion ra­tio in ru­ral area and fa­cil­i­tate banks to pro­vide ac­cess to credit to the peo­ple of this area by en­hanc­ing the out­reach.

The sur­vey con­ducted by Sukkur In­sti­tute of Busi­ness Ad­min­is­tra­tion for State Bank of Pak­istan (SBP) has pro­vided deeper and bet­ter in­sight of the char­ac­ter­is­tics of the district's ru­ral econ­omy.

Ac­cord­ing to de­tails, the to­tal sam­ple size was 300 re­spon­dents, five farm­ers were se­lected ran­domly from each vil­lage to col­lect their re­sponses on the sur­vey ques­tions; at some vil­lages 4 or 6 farm­ers were se­lected ran­domly.

In district Sukkur, ma­jor­ity of the farm­ers com­prise sub­sis­tence farm­ers as 31% farm­ers of district are those who own less than 5 acres of land, while about 34% farm­ers hold­ing up to 12.5 acres of land.

Farm­ers, stud­ied dur­ing sur­vey, spend around Rs.1,611 monthly on their chil­dren ed­u­ca­tion, with the max­i­mum amount of Rs. 12,000.

Farm­ing is a ma­jor com­po­nent of the district's ru­ral econ­omy as al­most all the re­spon­dents were en­gaged in farm­ing. Wheat, rice, cot­ton and sug­ar­cane are the ma­jor crops be­ing cul­ti­vated by 93%, 58%, 37% and 12% of the re­spon­dent farm­ers.

Around 24% of the re­spon­dent farm­ers are also cul­ti­vat­ing fruits in­clud­ing dates, man­goes and ba­nanas. Only 22% of the re­spon­dent farm­ers are rear­ing an­i­mal (live­stock). The sur­vey re­sults showed that al­most half (49%) of the farm­ers used pri­vately pur­chased seeds for wheat cul­ti­va­tion, 33% of the farm­ers used their own re­tained seed and 18% of the farm­ers used the seed pur­chased from Pub­lic Sec­tor Seed Cor­po­ra­tions. -App
