18th Amend­ment a gift of present regime: KP min­is­ter

PESHAWAR: Khy­ber Pakhtunkhwa In­for­ma­tion Min­ster Mian Iftikhar Hus­sain said on Wed­nes­day that the land­mark 18th Amend­ment was a gift of the present regime, which purged the con­sti­tu­tion of all la­cu­nas and dic­ta­to­rial laws and would strengthen demo­cratic in­sti­tu­tions in the coun­try.

Ad­dress­ing a del­e­ga­tion and trainee of­fi­cers of In­for­ma­tion Group here, the In­for­ma­tion Min­is­ter said that the par­lia­ment, ju­di­ciary and me­dia were strength­ened. The govern­ment be­lieves in strength­en­ing of demo­cratic in­sti­tu­tions in the coun­try to ad­dress peo­ples' prob­lems on mod­ern and sci­en­tific lines, he added. He said that the 18th Amend­ment ws a great achieve­ment of the present regime that would change des- tiny of peo­ple. It would bring rev­o­lu­tion­ary changes in the lives of com­mon peo­ple.

The min­is­ter said that de­part­ments un­der this land­mark amend­ment would soon be shifted to the prov­inces that would be a mo­men­tous step to­wards pro­vin­cial au­ton­omy.

Un­der­ling the need for a co­he­sive ap­proach by Pak­istan, Afghanistan and the United States led NATO forces to get rid of the men­ace of mil­i­tancy and ter­ror­ism, the min­is­ter said that it was un­for­tu­nate that the world had not ex­tended full sup­port to Pak­istan as de­served due to match­less con­tri­bu­tions and sac­ri­fices in war against ter­ror.

He said Pak­istan's se­cu­rity forces and peo­ple had sac­ri­ficed their lives in fight against ter­ror and "our con­tri­bu­tions in this long war are much greater than any other coun­try of the world".

Iftikhar sug­gested start­ing of po­lit­i­cal ac­tiv­i­ties in FATA. He said that po­lit­i­cal process was must to bring pos­i­tive changes in the lives of tribes­men. The min­is­ter said Pak­istan's fu­ture lied in democ­racy and re­it­er­ated that the govern­ment would com­plete its ten­ure.

The Min­is­ter s ai d t hat when t he Awami Na­tional Part y govern­ment was f or med i n KPK, it faced mount­ing chal­lenges, in­clud­ing mil­i­tancy in Swat, IDPs and later floods.

The govern­ment, he said, faced all these chal­lenges with sup­port of peo­ple. The govern­ment has al­lo­cated Rs.70bil­lion from its devel­op­ment fund for as­sis­tance of floods vic­tims, he added. -App
