18th Amendment a gift of present regime: KP minister
PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minster Mian Iftikhar Hussain said on Wednesday that the landmark 18th Amendment was a gift of the present regime, which purged the constitution of all lacunas and dictatorial laws and would strengthen democratic institutions in the country.
Addressing a delegation and trainee officers of Information Group here, the Information Minister said that the parliament, judiciary and media were strengthened. The government believes in strengthening of democratic institutions in the country to address peoples' problems on modern and scientific lines, he added. He said that the 18th Amendment ws a great achievement of the present regime that would change des- tiny of people. It would bring revolutionary changes in the lives of common people.
The minister said that departments under this landmark amendment would soon be shifted to the provinces that would be a momentous step towards provincial autonomy.
Underling the need for a cohesive approach by Pakistan, Afghanistan and the United States led NATO forces to get rid of the menace of militancy and terrorism, the minister said that it was unfortunate that the world had not extended full support to Pakistan as deserved due to matchless contributions and sacrifices in war against terror.
He said Pakistan's security forces and people had sacrificed their lives in fight against terror and "our contributions in this long war are much greater than any other country of the world".
Iftikhar suggested starting of political activities in FATA. He said that political process was must to bring positive changes in the lives of tribesmen. The minister said Pakistan's future lied in democracy and reiterated that the government would complete its tenure.
The Minister s ai d t hat when t he Awami National Part y government was f or med i n KPK, it faced mounting challenges, including militancy in Swat, IDPs and later floods.
The government, he said, faced all these challenges with support of people. The government has allocated Rs.70billion from its development fund for assistance of floods victims, he added. -App
