ISLAMABAD: Leader of Opposition in Senate Wasim Sajjad on Thursday called for unanimous and agreed decisions of the parliament on all national issues to strengthen the country and democratic institutions.

Speaking in Senate on 19th amendment bill, he said the members of parliament showed maturity on 18th and 19th amendments and the time has come that the parliament should take some unanimous decisions on other national problems including economy, unemployment, poverty, education and others.

"We should come up with agreed amendments to strengthen the country, liberation and democratic system," he added.

He said economy needs to be considered in depth and the parliament should have to take wise decision to improve the economic condition of the country because all the stakeholders are concerned in this regard.

Sajjad said the Parliamentary Committee made unanimous amendments to the National Assembly on the 18th amendment with very vital and important changes in the constitution.

Under the 18th amendment changes were made in four major areas including transferring of discretionary powers of the President to the Prime Minister.

"In my opinion the transfer of discretionary powers of the President to the prime minister is transferred to the Parliament because Prime Minister represents the Parliament".

He said powers of federation were transferred to the provinces. Similary, Election Commission of Pakistan was strengthened, his tenure was increased to five years and his appointment would now be done by the parliament.

He said that important changes were also made in appointment of judges of the superior courts. There were reservations regarding the method of appointment because it was affecting the supremacy of the apex court.

Supreme Court showed some observations in this regard and these were duly considered by the parliament and most of the recommendations of the parliamentary committee were incorporated in 19th amendment bill, he added.

Sajjad said that suggestions of all the parliamentarians should be duly considered for future amendments.

He said that the 19th amendment bill should be passed by the Senate. -App
