LHC dis­poses of pe­ti­tion against gas slab rates

Lahore High Court Chief Jus­tice Umar Ata Ban­dial on Wed­nes­day dis­posed of pe­ti­tion chal­leng­ing the in­crease in POL prices and slab rates of Sui Gas.

The chief jus­tice dis­pos­ing of pe­ti­tion held that the pe­ti­tioner should first avail al­ter­na­tive rem­edy un­der Sec­tion 12(2) of Ogra Or­di­nance 2002 and rule 16 of nat­u­ral gas tar­iff rules 2002, be­fore in­vok­ing ju­ris­dic­tion of the court.

The pe­ti­tion was filed by Muham­mad Hanif Go­raya, Con­sumer Rights Forum Pak­istan gen­eral sec­re­tary. The pe­ti­tioner, in his pe­ti­tion, men­tioned that the gov­ern­ment re­peat­edly in­creas­ing POL and gas prices which cause suf­fer­ing to com­mon man.

He said it was a pity that the gov­ern­ment tended to up the prices when POL rates were on the de­cline at in­ter­na­tional mar­ket. He prayed to the court to di­rect the re­spon­dents to re­verse the prices. He also re­quested the court to set aside a no­ti­fi­ca­tion of in­creas­ing slab rates of gas.
