Khoso di­rects ad­min­is­tra­tion to re­main alert

Care taker Prime Min­is­ter Jus­tice (R) Mir Hazar Khan Khoso Thurs­day said that he was com­mit­ted to hold­ing free and fair gen­eral elec­tions in the coun­try, di­rect­ing the Min­istry of In­te­rior to firm up all nec­es­sary ar­range­ments to achieve this na­tional ob­jec­tive.

The Prime Min­is­ter made th­ese ob­ser­va­tions at a brief­ing given to him by the se­nior of­fi­cials of the Min­istry of In­te­rior on the over­all in­ter­nal se­cu­rity sit­u­a­tion as well as ar­range­ments made in con­nec­tion with hold­ing of the gen­eral elec­tions.

In re­sponse to the Prime Min­is­ter's query over re­ports re­gard­ing de­lay in the pro­cess­ing of the pass­port ap­pli­ca­tions, he was in­formed that 600,000 ap­pli­ca­tions for re­newal of pass­ports were pend­ing be­cause of short­age of lam­i­nate pads.

In this con­nec­tion, Sec­re­tary In­te­rior Khawaja Sid­dique in­formed the Care taker Prime Min­is­ter that ten­der­ing process for lam­i­nate pads had been con­cluded and the low­est bid­der firm would pro­vide 500,000 lam­i­nate pads within a week.

He di­rected the in­te­rior min­istry to en­sure that the pen­dency is cleared at the ear­li­est to pro­vide re­lief to the com­mon man.

The Sec­re­tary In­te­rior as­sured the Prime Min­ster that in com­pli­ance of his in­struc­tions, ev­ery ef­forts will be made to im­prove the sit­u­a­tion with in a week.

He was in­formed that the min­istry was fully geared-up and mak­ing all nec­es­sary ar­range­ments in­clud­ing col­lec­tion and pool­ing of in­tel­li­gence. Be­sides, round the clock mon­i­tor­ing of the sit­u­a­tion is be­ing en­sured to main­tain peace dur­ing the elec­tion cam­paign and on the elec­tion day.

He was also in­formed that 85,000 pol­ing sta­tions are likely to be es­tab­lished for hold­ing of elec­tions. In this con­nec­tion, sen­si­tive polling sta­tions and ar­eas will be iden­ti­fied so that the polling can be car­ried out peace­fully there.
