Khoso directs administration to remain alert
Care taker Prime Minister Justice (R) Mir Hazar Khan Khoso Thursday said that he was committed to holding free and fair general elections in the country, directing the Ministry of Interior to firm up all necessary arrangements to achieve this national objective.
The Prime Minister made these observations at a briefing given to him by the senior officials of the Ministry of Interior on the overall internal security situation as well as arrangements made in connection with holding of the general elections.
In response to the Prime Minister's query over reports regarding delay in the processing of the passport applications, he was informed that 600,000 applications for renewal of passports were pending because of shortage of laminate pads.
In this connection, Secretary Interior Khawaja Siddique informed the Care taker Prime Minister that tendering process for laminate pads had been concluded and the lowest bidder firm would provide 500,000 laminate pads within a week.
He directed the interior ministry to ensure that the pendency is cleared at the earliest to provide relief to the common man.
The Secretary Interior assured the Prime Minster that in compliance of his instructions, every efforts will be made to improve the situation with in a week.
He was informed that the ministry was fully geared-up and making all necessary arrangements including collection and pooling of intelligence. Besides, round the clock monitoring of the situation is being ensured to maintain peace during the election campaign and on the election day.
He was also informed that 85,000 poling stations are likely to be established for holding of elections. In this connection, sensitive polling stations and areas will be identified so that the polling can be carried out peacefully there.
