Google bringing tweets to desktops

DELHI: Google has started displaying tweets in desktop search results, thanks to a new deal that the tech company inked with Twitter on 21 August. The deal is merely an extension of the partnership that began in May this year when Google started including tweets in mobile search results. Now the company has expanded this to include desktop searches, and in English, everywhere.

There was no formal announcement as the companies broke away from tradition by announcing the deal through a series of cute tweets between them. Hey @twitter, Search party at our place. Meet us on desktop?" Google said, to which Twitter replied, "You got it, @google. We'll bring the Tweets." This is not the first time that the companies have come together. In fact, the Google-Twitter partnership goes back as far as 2009, when tweets were displayed within Google search results. Unfortunately, that ended a couple of years later when then Twitter chief operating officer Ali Rowghani reportedly claimed that he wanted to have more control over the content on Twitter. Since then, the social media company has been on a downward trajectory with growth stagnating. The rise of rival social applications, including WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, further killed its appeal and user base. As per latest reports, even the company stock has taken a huge beating, down 29% since 28 July, when the company announced its second quarter earnings, warning investors that boosting its user growth rate will take a long time.
