Is­lam­abad Po­lice should take lead in re­forms: Ah­san

Fed­eral Min­is­ter Plan­ning, De­vel­op­ment and Re­form Ah­san Iqbal to­day said, "Is­lam­abad Po­lice should take the lead in the coun­try for po­lice re­forms to adopt smart and com­mu­nity polic­ing.

Po­lice has a key role for main­tain­ing the in­ter­nal se­cu­rity of the coun­try and needs sig­nif­i­cant re­forms in its cul­ture by switch­ing over to mod­ern tech­nol­ogy, com­mu­nity and cit­i­zens cen­tric sys­tems.

Min­is­ter made th­ese ob­ser­va­tions while chair­ing a meet­ing to re­view Model Po­lice Sta­tion pro­ject for Is­lam­abad Cap­i­tal Ter­ri­tory (ICT) PC1 in Min­istry of Plan­ning, De­vel­op­ment & Re­form. The meet­ing was at­tended by se­nior of­fi­cials of Min­istry of In­te­rior & Po­lice depart­ment. Min­is­ter noted that "model po­lice sta­tion" pro­ject is aimed at re­or­gan­is­ing the po­lice depart­ment on mod­ern lines in or­der to im­prove its ser­vice de­liv­ery, ef­fi­ciency and ef­fec­tive­ness.

He said that po­lice re­forms are es­sen­tial to pro­vide se­cu­rity to the ci­ti­zen and prompt re­dres­sal of pub­lic com­plaints. About im­ple­men­ta­tion of model po­lice sta­tion pro­ject, min­is­ter sug­gested that Is­lam­abad Po­lice should adopt a step-by-step ap­proach to re­form 22 Po­lice Sta­tions in ICT by tak­ing those po­lice sta­tions first which can be read­ily de­vel­oped into model po­lice sta­tions.

He also urged for adopt­ing a holis­tic and in­te­grated ap­proach for suc­cess­ful im­ple­men­ta­tion of this pro­ject. He said that po­lice re­forms are part of present govern­ment's re­form agenda and is fully com­mit­ted to com­plete the task for im­prov­ing the gov­er­nance. Po­lice re­forms are of ut­most im­por­tance to re­dress the pub­lic griev­ances and Is­lam­abad Po­lice should play proac­tive role in meet­ing cit­i­zens ex­pec­ta­tions.

He said that Is­lam­abad Po­lice should have a de­part­men­tal am­bi­tion for mak­ing this pro­ject a suc­cess. He stressed the need for train­ing of po­lice force by infusing the spirit of lead­er­ship in SHOs and mak­ing con­sta­bles com­mu­nity friendly per­son­nel. He also urged for us­ing tech­nol­ogy-en­abled ap­pli­ca­tions as part of smart polic­ing con­cept and em­pha­sized the need for stan­dard­iza­tion tech­nol­ogy in fed­eral and pro­vin­cial po­lice for cre­at­ing a na­tional po­lice man­age­ment sys­tem.

Safe City Pro­ject will pro­vide Is­lam­abad Po­lice a mod­ern tech­nol­ogy plat­form but to take full ad­van­tage of pro­ject com­pre­hen­sive train­ing pro­gramme for staff must be chalked out. Ah­san Iqbal as­sured that fed­eral govern­ment would pro­vide all the re­quired re­sources for model po­lice sta­tion pro­ject in ICT as part its agenda to bring re­forms in po­lice cul­ture.
