Maruti Suzuki unveils Vitara Brezza at Auto Expo 2016

The Pak Banker - - BUSINESS -

Car market leader Maruti Suzuki India Ltd took the wraps off the Vitara Brezza at the 16th edition of the auto expo on Wednesday. The company's maiden offering in the compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) segment goes on sale from March. The company will announce the price closer to the launch.

"The Vitara has been developed under a unique process with a sharp focus on Indian customers," said Toshihiro Suzuki, president and chief operating officer, Suzuki Motor Corp., addressing the media. Kenichi Ayukawa, managing director and chief executive, said, "If the Baleno is our poster for make in India, the Brezza is our statement of create in India."

Developed at a cost of Rs.860 crore, the Brezza will compete with the Mahindra TUV3OO, Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano in India. Unlike the recently launched Baleno and S-Cross, which are retailed through the premium channel Nexa, the latest offering will be available across all the Maruti dealerships. Brezza is the first product that has been developed from sketch to validation by an Indian team.

Suzuki plans to introduce 20 new models globally by 2020, of which 11 models will be in the small car segment and nine in the sedan and utility vehicle segment, as it seeks to shed the small-car-maker tag. At least 15 of the new cars are expected to be launched in India, where it aims to sell more than 2 million units (including exports) by 2020, up from 1.3 million units sold during the year ended 31 March 2015.

In his first- ever interaction with reporters in India, Toshihiro Suzuki said the India subsidiary will have to shoulder greater responsibility as Suzuki expands its presence into newer markets and braces to stave off competition from rivals by producing models which are better than expectations.
