Clean wa­ter is the ba­sic right of ev­ery ci­ti­zen, says CM Shah­baz

Pun­jab Chief Min­is­ter Muham­mad She­hbaz Sharif has said that avail­abil­ity of potable wa­ter is the ba­sic right of ev­ery ci­ti­zen and keep­ing in view this fact, Pun­jab govern­ment is im­ple­ment­ing a big pro­gramme un­der which wa­ter fil­tra­tion plants will be set up through­out the prov­ince.

He said that be­sides sup­ply of drink­ing wa­ter, im­prove­ment of sew­er­age sys­tem, ca­pac­ity-build­ing of WASA and use of mod­ern tech­nol­ogy for waste wa­ter treat­ment is the need of the hour. He said that Pun­jab govern­ment wants to ben­e­fit from the ex­pe­ri­ence and skill of a prom­i­nent Chi­nese com­pany as­so­ci­ated with wa­ter sec­tor so that bet­ter fa­cil­i­ties could be­come avail­able to the masses. He ex­pressed th­ese views while ad­dress­ing a meet­ing through video link at Civil Sec­re­tar­iat, Tues­day.

Se­nior of­fi­cials of the Chi­nese com­pany linked with wa­ter sec­tor also par­tic­i­pated in the meet­ing through video link. The of­fi­cials of Chi­nese com­pany ex­pressed will­ing­ness in pro­mot­ing co­op­er­a­tion with Pun­jab govern­ment for waste wa­ter treat­ment, sup­ply of potable wa­ter, im­prove­ment of sew­er­age sys­tem and ca­pac­ity- build­ing of WASA. The Chi­nese com­pany also as­sured to work speed­ily on var­i­ous on­go­ing pro­grammes of Pro­vin­cial Ir­ri­ga­tion Depart­ment.

Ad­dress­ing the meet­ing, She­hbaz Sharif said that there is a need to ben­e­fit from mod­ern tech­nol­ogy for im­prove­ment in wa­ter sup­ply and sew­er­age sys­tem, ca­pac­ity-build­ing of WASA and ben­e­fit­ting from mod­ern tech­nol­ogy for waste wa­ter treat­ment.

He said that sup­ply of clean drink­ing wa­ter can help save the peo­ple from dis­eases caused by con­tam­i­nated wa­ter. He said that a ba­sis re­spon­si­bil­ity can be dis­charged through re­solv­ing this is­sue by the use of mod­ern tech­nol­ogy, there­fore, the de­part­ments con­cerned should play an ac­tive role in this re­gard.

He said that sup­ply of potable wa­ter to the cit­i­zens is a col­lec­tive re­spon­si­bil­ity. She­hbaz Sharif fur­ther said that ca­pac­ity-build­ing of WASA and other con­cerned in­sti­tu­tions in big cities is es­sen­tial so that best fa­cil­i­ties could be made avail­able to the masses. He said that de­part­ments con­cerned will have to move for­ward in a pro­fes­sional man­ner.

The Chief Min­is­ter said that china is sin­cere and trusted friend of Pak­istan and ex­pe­ri­ence and ex­per­tise of China will be fully availed for the sup­ply of drink­ing wa­ter, waste wa­ter treat­ment, im­prove­ment of sew­er­age sys­tem and ca­pac­ity-build­ing of WASA.
