Drive for 100pc en­roll­ment to be launched from April 1, says Ah­san Iqbal

Fed­eral Min­ster for Plan­ning, De­vel­op­ment and Re­form, Prof. Ah­san Iqbal on Mon­day said a com­pre­hen­sive en­roll­ment drive would be launched across the coun­try from April 1 to 30 this year to en­sure 100 per­cent en­roll­ment in the schools by 2018.

The min­is­ter was ad­dress­ing a press con­fer­ence af­ter chair­ing the prepara­tory meet­ing on Na­tional En­roll­ment Drive here.

The meet­ing among oth­ers was at­tended by State Min­is­ter for Education, Ba­ligh-ur-Rehman and rep­re­sen­ta­tives from all the provinces, Azad Jammu and Kash­mir and FATA.

The Min­is­ter said that the bud­get for education would also go up to 4 per­cent of Gross Do­mes­tic Prod­uct (GDP) by 2018, which was cur­rently at 3 per­cent of GDP. He said that the cam­paign sched­uled to be launched on April 1, would en­sure 20 per­cent en­hance­ment in en­roll­ment all across the coun­try dur­ing the cur­rent year.

The Min­is­ter for Plan­ning how­ever, stressed the need for co­or­di­nated ef­forts to help in­crease en­roll­ment to lead to­wards progress and de­vel­op­ment. He ad­vised the par­tic­i­pants to en­sure a high level meet­ings to be chaired by Chief Min­is­ters in their re­spec­tive provinces, adding that his min­istry would also write to chief min­is­ters to con­vene such meet­ing and de­vise com­pre­hen­sive drive to launch the na­tional drive.

In ad­di­tion, he said that the District Co­or­di­na­tor Of­fi­cers and District Education Of­fi­cers must pre­pare a com­pre­hen­sive plan for launch­ing the drive by March 22 and for­ward the same to the min­istry to make plans for Na­tional En­roll­ment Drive.

He said that the stu­dents, al­ready en­rolled in schools, must come for­ward and visit other schools and make the cam­paign suc­cess­ful.

He said that Chief Min­is­ters of the provinces, Min­is­ters, mem­bers of par­lia­ment and other in­flu­en­tial per­son­al­i­ties may visit schools and en­roll stu­dents them­selves, which, he said would have good im­pact on the cam­paign.

He said that Pro­ject Man­age­ment Units would be es­tab­lished at Fed­eral and pro­vin­cial lev­els to mon­i­tor the ex­er­cise. The min­is­ter said that the Prime Min­is­ter would also con­vene a high level meet­ing to be par­tic­i­pated by the Chief Min­is­ters of the provinces to help make the cam­paign suc­cess­ful.

Ah­san Iqbal said that work on in­tro­duc­ing new cur­ricu­lum, at par with world stan­dards, was go­ing on adding that within two years, new and up­dated cur­ricu­lum would be in­tro­duced to im­prove education stan­dard.

The min­is­ter said that, he dur­ing his re­cent visit to US, de­manded that coun­try of pro­vid­ing education to ten thou­sand Ph.D schol­ars, for which he said the govern­ment would also pro­vide schol­ar­ships.

To a ques­tion, the min­is­ter said two univer­si­ties would be es­tab­lished at Gawadar and Zhob which would be func­tional by that by Septem­ber 2016.

He urged the me­dia to play pos­i­tive role for the de­vel­op­ment of the coun­try and help make the up­com­ing education en­roll­ment cam­paign suc­cess­ful.
