Drive for 100pc enrollment to be launched from April 1, says Ahsan Iqbal
Federal Minster for Planning, Development and Reform, Prof. Ahsan Iqbal on Monday said a comprehensive enrollment drive would be launched across the country from April 1 to 30 this year to ensure 100 percent enrollment in the schools by 2018.
The minister was addressing a press conference after chairing the preparatory meeting on National Enrollment Drive here.
The meeting among others was attended by State Minister for Education, Baligh-ur-Rehman and representatives from all the provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and FATA.
The Minister said that the budget for education would also go up to 4 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2018, which was currently at 3 percent of GDP. He said that the campaign scheduled to be launched on April 1, would ensure 20 percent enhancement in enrollment all across the country during the current year.
The Minister for Planning however, stressed the need for coordinated efforts to help increase enrollment to lead towards progress and development. He advised the participants to ensure a high level meetings to be chaired by Chief Ministers in their respective provinces, adding that his ministry would also write to chief ministers to convene such meeting and devise comprehensive drive to launch the national drive.
In addition, he said that the District Coordinator Officers and District Education Officers must prepare a comprehensive plan for launching the drive by March 22 and forward the same to the ministry to make plans for National Enrollment Drive.
He said that the students, already enrolled in schools, must come forward and visit other schools and make the campaign successful.
He said that Chief Ministers of the provinces, Ministers, members of parliament and other influential personalities may visit schools and enroll students themselves, which, he said would have good impact on the campaign.
He said that Project Management Units would be established at Federal and provincial levels to monitor the exercise. The minister said that the Prime Minister would also convene a high level meeting to be participated by the Chief Ministers of the provinces to help make the campaign successful.
Ahsan Iqbal said that work on introducing new curriculum, at par with world standards, was going on adding that within two years, new and updated curriculum would be introduced to improve education standard.
The minister said that, he during his recent visit to US, demanded that country of providing education to ten thousand Ph.D scholars, for which he said the government would also provide scholarships.
To a question, the minister said two universities would be established at Gawadar and Zhob which would be functional by that by September 2016.
He urged the media to play positive role for the development of the country and help make the upcoming education enrollment campaign successful.
