Sum­mit Bank ap­points Zahir Es­mail as CEO

KARACHI: The board of di­rec­tors (BoD) of Sum­mit Bank has ap­pointed Mo­ham­mad Zahir Es­mail as its pres­i­dent and chief ex­ec­u­tive of­fi­cer. He will take over from the re­tir­ing pres­i­dent and CEO Hu­sain Lawai, who re­tired af­ter serv­ing for over 45 years in lead­ing po­si­tions and has been el­e­vated to play his role as vice chair­man on the BoD. Es­mail has 48 years of di­ver­si­fied bank­ing ex­pe­ri­ence in­clud­ing con­ven­tional as well as Is­lamic. He joined the bank­ing in­dus­try in 1968 as an of­fi­cer at Habib Bank Lim­ited, Karachi. He had also been as­so­ci­ated with Habib Bank AG Zurich, HBZ Bank South Africa, Habib Metropoli­tan Bank, Arif Habib Bank Lim­ited and My Bank Lim­ited where he im­parted his pro­fes­sional ex­pe­ri­ences in the suc­cess­ful growth of th­ese banks. On the oc­ca­sion, Sum­mit Bank Chair­man Nasser Ab­dulla Hus­sain Lootah said, "With the ex­pe­ri­ence and well-recog­nised qual­i­ties that Zahir Es­mail brings to the ta­ble, he was the best can­di­date to head the en­tity and we be­lieve he will carry on the good work done by Hu­sain Lawai." A com­merce grad­u­ate, Es­mail has re­ceived the Post Grad­u­ate Diploma Course of Is­lamic Bank­ing from the Cen­tre of Is­lamic Eco­nom­ics. He has also re­ceived Is­lamic Bank­ing Cer­tifi­cate Course from Na­tional In­sti­tute of Bank­ing and Fi­nance. Apart from bank­ing cour­ses, he has earned his Diploma in Ac­coun­tancy from Lon­don Cham­ber of Com­merce. Fur­ther­more, he at­tended the Di­rec­tors Train­ing Pro­gramme at the Cen­ter for Ex­ec­u­tive Education (CEE) In­sti­tute of Busi­ness Ad­min­is­tra­tion, Karachi. He has also earned var­i­ous awards and recog­ni­tions dur­ing his bank­ing ca­reer. Speak­ing about his cur­rent re­spon­si­bil­ity, Zahir Es­mail stated, "The op­por­tu­nity pre­sented by Sum­mit Bank, one of the fastest grow­ing com­mer­cial banks of Pak­istan, is ex­cit­ing. I look for­ward to the chal­lenges and hope to play a piv­otal role in the growth of Sum­mit Bank in years to come.
