Summit Bank appoints Zahir Esmail as CEO
KARACHI: The board of directors (BoD) of Summit Bank has appointed Mohammad Zahir Esmail as its president and chief executive officer. He will take over from the retiring president and CEO Husain Lawai, who retired after serving for over 45 years in leading positions and has been elevated to play his role as vice chairman on the BoD. Esmail has 48 years of diversified banking experience including conventional as well as Islamic. He joined the banking industry in 1968 as an officer at Habib Bank Limited, Karachi. He had also been associated with Habib Bank AG Zurich, HBZ Bank South Africa, Habib Metropolitan Bank, Arif Habib Bank Limited and My Bank Limited where he imparted his professional experiences in the successful growth of these banks. On the occasion, Summit Bank Chairman Nasser Abdulla Hussain Lootah said, "With the experience and well-recognised qualities that Zahir Esmail brings to the table, he was the best candidate to head the entity and we believe he will carry on the good work done by Husain Lawai." A commerce graduate, Esmail has received the Post Graduate Diploma Course of Islamic Banking from the Centre of Islamic Economics. He has also received Islamic Banking Certificate Course from National Institute of Banking and Finance. Apart from banking courses, he has earned his Diploma in Accountancy from London Chamber of Commerce. Furthermore, he attended the Directors Training Programme at the Center for Executive Education (CEE) Institute of Business Administration, Karachi. He has also earned various awards and recognitions during his banking career. Speaking about his current responsibility, Zahir Esmail stated, "The opportunity presented by Summit Bank, one of the fastest growing commercial banks of Pakistan, is exciting. I look forward to the challenges and hope to play a pivotal role in the growth of Summit Bank in years to come.
