Agri­cul­ture poli­cies need to be dis­cussed in Par­lia­ment: Khur­ram

IS­LAM­ABAD: All political par­ties must hold de­bate on all agri­cul­ture poli­cies in or­der to fa­cil­i­tate and im­prove liv­ing stan­dard for farm­ers. Min­is­ter for Com­merce, Khur­ram Dast­gir Khan on Fri­day in­formed the Na­tional As­sem­bly that all political par­ties had al­ready agreedto dis­cuss agri­cul­ture and farm­ers re­lated is­sues in the par­lia­ment to mit­i­gate prob­lems of farm­ers. He said that it would be ben­e­fi­cial to in­cul­cate in­put of all political par­ties in chalk­ing out po­lices on agri­cul­ture sec­tor.He said that tar­get of cot­ton yield could not be achieved due to ex­ces­sive rains, adding the govern­ment was giv­ing qual­ity seeds and im­part­ing train­ing to farm­ers to min­i­mize dam­ages due to wa­ter in fields. He said that Stand­ing Com­mit­tee had al­ready ap­proved Pak­istan Seed Act and Plant Breeder Risk Act and now this im­port leg­is­la­tion would be dis­cussed in the par­lia­ment.

He stressed the need to ex­pe­dite leg­is­la­tion on agri­cul­ture re­lated is­sues as it would open new av­enues of re­search for the bet­ter­ment of farm­ers com­mu­nity. He said that the govern­ment was com­mit­ted to im­prove liv­ing stan­dard of farm­ers and had an­nounced var­i­ous in­cen­tives in­clud­ing Kisan Pack­age and giv­ing 25 per­cent sub­sidy of agri­cul­ture in­stru­ments. He said that close co­or­di­na­tion be­tween the fed­eral and pro­vin­cial gov­ern­ments was nec­es­sary to over­come prob­lems be­ing faced by farm­ers par­tic­u­larly cot­ton farm­ers. Fed­eral Min­is­ter for Food and Agri­cul­ture speak­ing on the oc­cas­sion said his min­istry should take over charge of all affairs in­clud­ing cot­ton sec­tor.
