Agriculture policies need to be discussed in Parliament: Khurram
ISLAMABAD: All political parties must hold debate on all agriculture policies in order to facilitate and improve living standard for farmers. Minister for Commerce, Khurram Dastgir Khan on Friday informed the National Assembly that all political parties had already agreedto discuss agriculture and farmers related issues in the parliament to mitigate problems of farmers. He said that it would be beneficial to inculcate input of all political parties in chalking out polices on agriculture sector.He said that target of cotton yield could not be achieved due to excessive rains, adding the government was giving quality seeds and imparting training to farmers to minimize damages due to water in fields. He said that Standing Committee had already approved Pakistan Seed Act and Plant Breeder Risk Act and now this import legislation would be discussed in the parliament.
He stressed the need to expedite legislation on agriculture related issues as it would open new avenues of research for the betterment of farmers community. He said that the government was committed to improve living standard of farmers and had announced various incentives including Kisan Package and giving 25 percent subsidy of agriculture instruments. He said that close coordination between the federal and provincial governments was necessary to overcome problems being faced by farmers particularly cotton farmers. Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture speaking on the occassion said his ministry should take over charge of all affairs including cotton sector.
