Shang­hai Mu­seum (201 Ren­min Av­enue, Huangpu; shang­haimu­seum.net) houses a fab­u­lous ar­ray of Chi­nese arte­facts, in­clud­ing ce­ram­ics, bronzes and sculp­tures. An ex­cel­lent au­dio guide will take you around the high­lights.

Shang­hai Old City (north of Fang­bang Cen­tral Road, Huangpu) is an en­ter­tain­ing, themed recre­ation area lined by in­for­mal restau­rants and tea houses. Its shops sell hand­i­crafts, fans, lanterns and other tra­di­tional sou­venirs.

An­cient Longhua Tem­ple (2853 Longhua Road, Xuhui) has a soar­ing pagoda and an in­cens­esmoky main hall al­ways busy with wor­ship­pers. It has a his­tory dat­ing back to 242 AD and is the city’s largest, most au­then­tic tem­ple com­plex.
