THIS FREE ONLINE CLASS WILL TEACH KIDS HOW TO GROW THEIR OWN FOOD

-

KIDS WHO FARM (KWF), a Zamboanga City-based initiative that aims to teach kids, out of school youth, and women the importance of farming and food production is holding free online classes on urban container gardening.

The course is not just for kids; it’s meant for anyone interested in growing their own food in limited space.

What started as a one-time session became a regular event, especially since a lot of kids, parents, and kids at heart suddenly have a lot of free time on their hands because of the enhanced community quarantine set in place in a bid to halt the spread of COVID-19.

The training module is divided into two (2) sessions with each session lasting an hour. Session 1 covers an overview of food security concepts and introduction to home gardening, garden site selection, soil medium preparation, choosing the right container, and seed sowing and seedling care.

Session 2 covers how to transplant, watering and fertilisation, trellising, and natural pest control.

They have weekday and weekend sessions, all of which begin at 1pm. The weekday schedule is Session 1 on Thursday and Session 2 on Friday, while the weekend schedule is Session 1 on Saturday and Session 2 on Sunday.

The initiative is currently supported by RISPace Co-Working, JCI Lanao Greenfields, Mindanao Technical Training Academy and TESDA-Bukidnon.

KWF is project started by father and daughter team Muneer and Raaina Hinay. The organization, which is completely staffed by volunteers, has trained over 400 individuals on gardening basics thus far.

“Our little contribution to sharing knowledge on growing food. Make farming fun & easy,” says Muneer.
