4 dead as van rams tricycle in Gen-San
FOUR persons were killed when a van rammed a tricycle in General Santos City, Thursday afternoon, police said Friday.
Among those killed were tricycle driver Carlo Papalid and his passengers Jocelyn Cabang and Romel Salawa, said Chief Insp. Aldrin Gonzales, Central Mindanao regional police spokesman.
Also killed was John Roi Perez, driver of the van involved in the mishap.
The incident occurred around 2:10 p.m., while the tricycle (MC-36633) was travelling along the road in Brgy. Baluan, followed by the Mitsubishi L300 van (ZEZ-139).
Investigation indicated that Perez's van tried to overtake the tricycle, which was then moving slow because it was heavily loaded with bananas.
The van tried to overtake from the right side but its front left tire suddenly exploded, causing the driver to loose control of the vehicle and ram the tricycle's rear, Gonzales said.
Due to the strong impact, the tricycle's side car was detached and it incurred severe damage, he said.
Papalid, Cabang, and Salawa were brought to a hospital because of serious injuries, but were declared dead by doctors, Gonzales said.
The van also bore severe damage to its front and Perez was taken to the Dr. Jeorge P. Royeca Hospital for serious head injuries, but was also declared dead, he said.
