PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte on Monday afternoon had his first bilateral meeting with United States President Donald Trump.

This was the second meeting of Duterte and Trump after their brief meeting at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Summit in Vietnam on November 11.

“We’ve had a great relationship. This has been very successful,” Trump told Duterte.

Tr u m p pra ised Duterte’s hosting of the Asean summit, which he said has been “handled beautifully.”

“We very much appreciate the great treatment that you have given. I thought last night’s event was fantastic, tremendous talent,” he said, adding that he and other leaders had a “tremendous time” during the gala dinner on Sunday night.

“So I think in behalf of the leaders, and everybody, I want to thank you and I want to thank the Philippines,” he added.

Duterte and Trump’s meeting came amid improving relations between the PH and the US.

Duterte had said that the two countries remain to be “the best of friends.”

The US had earned the ire of Duterte after he accused former president Barack Obama of meddling in the country’s domestic affairs, particularly his brutal war on drugs.
