Motorcycle thief killed in shootout with cops in Tacurong

A 42-YEAR-OLD man was killed in a shootout wi t h policemen in Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat, late Sunday, after he held two students at gunpoint and took their motorcycle, police said.

The suspect, later identified through his voter's ID as Renato Gayanandang of Lambayong town, succumbed to seven bullet wounds, said Chief Insp. Aldrin Gonzales, Central Mindanao regional police spokesman.

Before the shootout, one Ahmeer Paguital, a 19-year-old student at the Notre Dame of Tacurong College, reported that he and his friend were held up in Brgy. New Isabela past 10 p.m.

Paguital told police that he and his friend John Teodoro, a student at the Sultan Kudarat State University, were passing through Purok Sampaguita on motorcycle when an unidentified man pointed his firearm at them and took the vehicle.

Operatives of the Tacurong City Police immediately conducted pursuit and cornered a man riding that motorcycle along Martinez Road in Brgy. Poblacion.

"When the suspect noticed that PNP personnel were approaching, he drew his firearm and fired towards the operatives, prompting them to neutralize him," Gonzales said.

Police recovered the motorcycle, a revolver loaded with two live ammunition and two fired cartridge cases from the suspect. — John Roson
