100 families leave Iligan village

ILIGAN CITY—About 100 families have been displaced as the military continues to go after communist rebels who ambushed two soldiers in Barangay Rogongon here on Sunday.

T Sgt. Edgar Andal was killed while Corporal Raymart Pamplona was wounded when they were attacked by a group of New People's Army (NPA) rebels.

The soldiers, bothmembers of the 4th Mechanized Infantry Battalion, were inspecting landslides along a village road in Rogongon when rebels manning a checkpoint fired at them as they tried to escape.

Col. Alex Aduca, the battalion commander, said three families from a community in Sitio Libandayan were the first to leave the area. Other residents followed.

At least 98 families (526 individuals) sought temporary refuge in a section of Rogongon, according to village chair Radi Pugoy.

She also announced that classes in Sitio Libandayan and Salingsingan have been suspended.
