Police official injured in clash with NPA

A POLICE official was injured as lawmen clashed with New People's Army members in Butuan City, police said Wednesday.

Insp. Mark Wayne Uberto, of the 13th Regional Mobile Force Battalion (RMFB), suffered a bullet wound to the right leg, said Chief Supt. Noli Romana, Caraga regional police director.

Me m b e r s of the RMFB and the Butuan City Mobile Force Company were conducting combat operations when they encountered an undetermined number of rebels in Sitio Lamusig, Brgy. Manila de Bugabos, around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Firefight lasted for about 30 minutes, before the rebels withdrew to the area's mountainous part, Romana said.

The lawmen later extracted their wounded comrade. It was not immediately known of there were casualties among the rebels, who are believed to be under the North Central Mindanao Reg ional Committee's Guerilla Front 4A.

Police units in nearby areas have been placed on alert because of the fighting and checkpoints were established, Romana said. — John Roson
