5 nuns injured as van falls into beach in Surigao del Sur

FIVE nuns were injured when the van they were riding fell off the road and into the seaside, in Cagwait, Surigao del Sur, Wednesday afternoon, police reported.

Injured were the driver Sr. Lydia Altares, 45; and passengers Srs. Joelen Garay, 26; Yustina Uran, 31; Maria Alfonsa, 29; and Sheera Pederano, 26, according to a report from the Caraga police.

All five are from the Our Lady of Pompei School in Lianga, also in Surigao del Sur.

The incident occurred past 5 p.m., along the National Highway in Sitio Hinayhayan, Brgy. Bacolod.

Altares was driving the green Hyundai van (MCD-836) from Lianga going to Tandag City, when the vehicle fell into a cliff beside the road, and rested upside down at the seaside.

Initial investigation indicated that Altares suddenly lost control of the steering wheel, according to the report.

All the van's occupants were brought by the rescue teams of Cagwait and Bayabas to the Adela Serra Ty Memorial Medical Center in Tandag City for treatment. — John Roson
