Abueva questionable vs Phoenix

HARDWORKING Alaska Aces forward Calvin Abueva may sit out their game today against the Phoenix Petroleum Fuels Masters as he awaits a protective mask to use as cover for the busted lip he suffered while practicing with Gilas Pilipinas early this week.

Accidentally elbowed by fellow Gilas pool member Almond Vosotros while in scrimmage, Mr. Abueva had to be taken to the hospital after the incident where he received eight stitches to close the injured lip.

Alaska coach Alex Compton was advised by the doctor that Mr. Abueva has to wear a protective mask before he is allowed to play. They are expecting the mask to be available by today.

“We just have to wait and see. If the mask is available, then that’s the only way he can play. But if it’s not yet there, then he’ll have to sit out,” Mr. Compton told BusinessWorld in a telephone interview.

The former San Sebastian stalwart, according to Mr. Compton, is not allowed to do any physical activity as well.

Mr. Abueva is scheduled for an appointment with the doctor as of press time and will be measured up for his mask.

The mask, according to Mr. Compton, is a unique one as protective masks are usually being worn to protect a broken nose bridge, an injured cheek bone or an eye injury.

“It means the mask is being made for Calvin to cover him up all the way down to the mouth. I’m also curious to see how it looks like,” added Mr. Compton. —
