UST hon­ors Jol­libee founder with doc­tor­ate de­gree

THE UNI­VER­SITY of Santo To­mas (UST) hon­ors its alum­nus, Jol­libee Foods Corp. founder and chair­man Tony Tan Cak­tiong, by con­fer­ring upon him the de­gree Doc­tor of Busi­ness Ad­min­is­tra­tion, hon­oris causa, at a cer­e­mony that will be held to­day, Feb. 15, at the UST Medicine Au­di­to­rium, Manila. causa, upon il­lus­tri­ous in­di­vid­u­als and alumni who have man­i­fested out­stand­ing con­tri­bu­tion in the field where he/she is be­ing rec­og­nized. In the his­tory of the 407 year-old Uni­ver­sity, 77 in­di­vid­u­als from di­verse fields from all over the world have re­ceived the hon­orary doc­tor­ate de­gree. In­cluded in the ros­ter are Pres­i­dent Manuel L. Que­zon, Pres­i­dent of the UN Assem­bly and Filipino di­plo­mat Car­los P. Ro­mulo, Prince Juan Car­los de Bor­bon of Spain, Pres­i­dent Co­ra­zon C. Aquino, SGV Founder Wash­ing­ton SyCip, Fo­co­lare founder Chiara Lu­bich, Chief Jus­tice of the Supreme Court of the Rus­sian Fed­er­a­tion Vy­ach­eslav Mikhailovich Lebe­dev, Jaime Car­di­nal L. Sin, among oth­ers. The most re­cent awardees were Mer­cury Drug Founder Mar­i­ano Que and UnionBank Pres­i­dent Justo A. Or­tiz, who re­ceived their awards in 2015. Mr. Tan Cak­tiong be­comes the 78th awardee of a doc­tor­ate de­gree, hon­oris causa.

The cer­e­mony will be led by UST Rec­tor Very Rev. Fr. Her­minio V. Dago­hoy, O.P., who will give the ad­dress of Con­ces­sion in re­sponse to the Ad­dress of Pe­ti­tion that will be read by the UST Grad­u­ate School Dean Dr. Mar­ilu R. Madrunio. The Re­gent of the Fac­ulty of En­gi­neer­ing Rev. Fr. Roberto L. Luan­zon, Jr., O.P., will give the in­vo­ca­tion, while Dean Philip­ina A. Marcelo will read the diploma. Tan Cak­tiong will de­liver his ad­dress of ac­cep­tance. UST Sec­re­tary Gen­eral, Fr. Je­sus M. Mi­randa, Jr., O.P., will be the Mas­ter of Cer­e­monies.

Cit­ing his achieve­ments in the food in­dus­try that has spanned 40 years, Mr. Tan Cak­tiong’s vi­sion­ary lead­er­ship has not only placed his com­pany, Jol­libee Foods Corp., as the first food ser­vice com­pany in the Philip­pines to be pub­licly listed in the Philip­pine Stock Ex­change, it has also ac­quired busi­ness in­ter­ests in var­i­ous food brands in Asia and the United States.
