Dragon’s Back Trail

Voted the Best Ur­ban Hik­ing Trail in Asia, Dragon’s Back is the clas­sic trail fol­low­ing Sec­tion 8 of the 50-km Hong Kong Trail. You’ll end up on the beach of Big Wave Bay, where many surf and swim dur­ing the sum­mer. dif­fi­culty: Medium du­ra­tion: 3 to 6 hours dis­tance: 8.5 kilo­me­ters Get there: MTR to Shau Kei Wan Sta­tion Exit A3. Catch Bus 9 at the ter­mi­nus to To Tei Wan, Shek O Road.

Get out: Buses, taxis, and minibuses stop by Big Wave Bay and can take you back to the MTR sta­tion. A short but chal­leng­ing hike end­ing at the fa­mous land­mark, the Big Bud­dha on Lan­tau Is­land. It’s the sec­ond high­est peak in Hong Kong, and the jour­ney is well worth the ef­fort. dif­fi­culty: Dif­fi­cult du­ra­tion: 2.5 hours dis­tance: 4.5 kilo­me­tres Get there: At MTR Tung Chung Sta­tion, take bus 3M, 11, or 23 to Pak Kung Au. Fol­low the signs from Lan­tau Sec­tion 3 to Ngong Ping (the Big Bud­dha).

Get out: Via ca­ble car for scenic views of Ngong Ping Vil­lage.

Cy­cling by the river

The cy­cle path start­ing at Tai Wai and end­ing at Tai Mei Tuk is a fa­vorite of leisure cy­clists in Hong Kong, es­pe­cially en­joy­able dur­ing the chill­ier months. It’s a flat, scenic ride along the Shing Mun River —and later Tolo Har­bour —tak­ing you through in­ter­est­ing sights. Choose any of the MTR sta­tions you pass as your exit point; we sug­gest the Tai Po Mar­ket Sta­tion. dif­fi­culty: Easy du­ra­tion: 3 hours Get there: From MTR Tai Wai Sta­tion Exit A, cross the street and turn right and you’ll find sev­eral bike rentals. The track starts right out­side the Sta­tion.

For an eas­ier day out on your bi­cy­cle, head to the West Kowloon Wa­ter­front Promenade. It’s just a 1.5km- flat ride along Vic­to­ria Har­bour. Go to west­­bike.
