Op­por­tu­nity amidst ad­ver­sity. Yes, the Philip­pine econ­omy is the best per­form­ing econ­omy in Asia (even bet­ter than China and Sin­ga­pore). Yes, our tourism ar­rivals will ex­ceed tar­gets de­spite the nat­u­ral calami­ties that rav­aged some parts of the coun­try. And yes, the malls (par­tic­u­larly Ayala Malls, SM Su­permalls, Robin­sons Malls, and Megaworld Lifet­style Malls) will con­tinue to ex­pand in dif­fer­ent parts of the coun­try. Amidst this back­drop of op­por­tu­ni­ties lies the land­scape of ad­ver­sity. Con­versely, if there are peren­nial storms to be weath­ered in 2014 (lack of food sup­ply caused by cli­mate change, brain-drain in the ho­tel and restau­rant sec­tor, and grow­ing gap be­tween class­room the­ory and in­dus­try prac­tice), we see op­por­tu­ni­ties abound.
