Donuts by Cup­cakes by Sonja For nearly 11 years, Sonja Ocampo has been the cup­cake queen in Manila and while she is known pri­mar­ily for her lit­tle cakes, Ocampo is no one-trick pony. Con­stant trav­els to Italy and United King­dom opened her to the world of Ital­ian filled dough­nuts called bom­boloni. She even ended up in the kitchen of star baker and Bread Ahead’s Justin Gel­latly whose dough­nuts, he shares in an in­ter­view with Fi­nan­cial Times, “give peo­ple so much hap­pi­ness.” Ocampo tried her hand at mak­ing bom­bolo­nis for Cup­cakes by Sonja’s 10th an­niver­sary last year, pro­duc­ing a rea­son­able recre­ation of dough­nuts from her per­spec­tive—vanilla bean, crème caramel, choco­late, straw­berry cheese­cake, truf­fle, and seven other fla­vors.
