Lenses are still made by hand at Canon’s Ut­sunomiya Of­fice in Ja­pan. Mas­ter crafts­men (and women), also known as ‘takumi’ in Ja­panese, shape, as­sem­ble, and check the lenses at the lens fac­tory, hand in hand with au­to­mated pro­cesses. It takes 25 to 30 years be­fore a lens tech­ni­cian can at­tain the sta­tus of a mas­ter.
