Solid punch for athletes: Pacquiao gives backing to Olympic Village

Inquirer Libre - Davao - - SPORTS - By June Navarro

SEN. MANNY Pacquiao is backing up the plan to put up a national training center for athletes.

Philippine Sports Commission chair William Ramirez and Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose Cojuangco Jr. yesterday brought up the proposed multibillion-peso training facility and its benefits for the athletes before the Senate committee on sports chaired by the Filipino boxing icon.

Ramirez talked about the construction of an Olympic village at Clark Green City in Pampanga as the nerve center for training elite athletes as well as the building of regional training centers across the country for the developmental pool.

“I’m hoping that we can begin these plans right away. We need to act on it at once,” said Pacquiao, who presided the hearing graced by POC board member Cynthia Carrion, Games and Amusement Board chair Abraham Kahlil Mitra and PSC commissioners Ramon Fernandez and Celia Kiram. “I’m expecting results in three to six years.”
