PASTOR Government transactions and classes in public and private schools in Sapad, Lanao del Norte were suspended on Thursday following the declaration of a local holiday to commemorate the first death anniversary of Dr. Dreyfuss Perlas. The holiday was declared by the town council and was approved by Mayor Paruk Asis. The council also renamed the town's birthing center in memory of Perlas, 31, a native of Aklan province who came to the town as part of the Department of Health's Doctors to the Barrios program. He was a Sapad health officer at the time of his murder on March 1 last year.

The Department of Health (DOH) disclosed that about 11,000 dengue cases had been reported in the first six weeks of the year. According to the DOH Dengue Disease Surveillance Report, a total of 10,980 dengue cases were reported from Jan. 1 to Feb. 10. A total of 51 deaths had also been recorded for 2018, the DOH report added.

Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno apologized for the way her leave of absence was conveyed. "It is unfortunate that my plan of making use of an already approved wellness leave in relation to an indefinite leave was inaccurately conveyed for which I apologize," Sereno said in a statement issued Thursday, in response to the joint statement issued by her 13 colleagues from the Supreme Court.

President Duterte on Thursday said he would not recommend another postponement of village and youth council elections on May 14, but warned that there would be more killings if candidates involved in illegal drugs were elected. “I say let’s have an election,” Mr. Duterte said in a speech at a shooting competition for policemen and soldiers here.
