PSC invades Cordilleras

AFTER serving as an instrument of peace in Mindanao, the Children’s Games of the Philippine Sports Commission will now bring its act in the Cordilleras.

PSC chair Butch Ramirez said the Games would set up camp in La Trinidad, Benguet, on July 11-13 where nearly a thousand kids 12 years old and below in the mountainous region are expected to participate.

According to Ramirez, getting these children into sports early would prepare them in bigger tournaments ahead like the Batang Pinoy Games, Palarong Pambansa, Philippine National Games and eventually in international meets while playing for the national team.

“But we’re not only expecting to get children into sports. We also want to mold them as responsible and well- rounded future leaders of our country,’’ said Ramirez.

“This is the real gold medal that we should be aiming for. Once we encourage kids to play here, their lives will begin to change through sports,’’ he added.

Project director Ronnel Abrenica said the Children’s Games is the vehicle to discover young talented athletes on the barangay level nationwide.

“This is the thrust of President Duterte, to make sports accessible to all,” said Abrenica.

Over 600 children participated in the highly successful Mindanao Children’s Games held in Davao City last month despite the ongoing crisis in Marawi City.
