Look up at the colorful murals that decorate the city's underpasses
Makati’s underpass murals have long made walking around the city’s Central Business District more enjoyable, and four more were unveiled last month, all part of the effort to “pedestrianize” Makati.
At the Sedeño, Paseo de Roxas, Salcedo, and Rufino underpasses, the 300,000 pedestrians who ply Makati Central Business District's streets daily can witness the intersection of art and advertising, as the featured murals each were sponsored by corporations: Nestlé for the Sedeño underpass, Security Bank for the Paseo de Roxas underpass, Pilipinas Shell for the Salcedo underpass and Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC) for the Rufino underpass.
Nestlé’s mural carries its popular tagline “Everyone deserves a break,” from their KitKat chocolate line, and the image was developed by a creative team from J. Walter Thompson. At the Rufino underpass, the RCBC-sponsored mural depicts the bank’s financial products and services with a highlight on their “green” projects. For the Shell mural, the 10 previous winners of the company’s annual art competition created an image that illustrates Shell’s operations, including the Malampaya natural gas project. Graphic designer Daniel Tingcungco, meanwhile, created Security Bank’s mural, which depicted the youth reaching for their dreams in reflection of Security Bank Foundation’s thrust to support education.
These murals are part of “Make It Happen, Make It Makati,” a widespread campaign spearheaded by Ayala Land, Inc. and the Makati Commercial Estate Association (MaCEA) to “strengthen Makati’ s position as the leading city for business, lifestyle, entertainment, and culture.”
