After leading stats, Fajardo on track for 4th MVP award
San Miguel Beer’s June Mar Fajardo remains on track for a fourth straight Most Valuable Player award after topping the Statistical Points race at the end of the PBA Governors’ Cup semifinals.
Fajardo, the 6-foot-10 center from Cebu who already holds the record of three consecutive MVP plums, has accumulated an average 38.58 SP in the race for the top individual award this season.
The winner of the season MVP will be known in the PBA Leo Awards on Oct. 20, before Game 4 of the Finals between Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and Meralco at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. A fourth MVP by Fajardo would put him in an elite category that only two former players in the league have achieved as Ramon Fernandez and Alvin Patrimonio won four MVP trophies apiece.
Fernandez bagged MVP plums in 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1988, while Patrimonio, now a team manager of Star, won it in 1991, 1993, 1994 and 1997.
Fajardo has a huge lead over SMB teammate Alex Cabagnot, who is at second with 32.96 SP. Also in the top 10 are SMB’s Arwind Santos, who is at fifth with 30.97 SP, Chris Ross is at eighth slot with 30.40 SP, and Marcio Lassiter at 10th spot with 29.55 SP.
Fajardo, the Philippine Cup Best Player of the Conference, and Ross, the BPC recipient in the Commissioner’s Cup, are outright candidates for the MVP derby together with the BPC winner in the Governors’ Cup.
