- By ARIEL P. AVENDAÑO

SAN LUIS, Aurora — A van crashed into a tree at an accident-prone area of the national highway in Barangay Bacong, this town, killing a Department of Education (DepEd) provincial official and seriously injuring the driver and four other passengers of the vehicle before midnight Friday.

Senior Inspector Ysrael Namoro, local police chief, identified the fatality as Aurora Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Emelyn dela Torre-Macaraeg, 45, married. She was declared dead on arrival at the Premier General Hosptial.

Namoro said the accident happened shortly before midnight when van driver Teejay Millado lost control of the wheel as the vehicle skidded off the slippery road and rammed into the tree on the roadside of Sitio Hiwalayan, Barangay Bacong.

Apart from Millado, four other passengers of the van sustained bone fractures due to the crash. Namoro identified them as Regie Bryan Roxas, 36, of Cavite; Dianne Rose Gonzales, 23, of Baler, Aurora; and Nerissa Calano and Joan Bagaoisan, both of Gapan, Nueva Ecija.

Responding rescue volunteers said it took a while for them to extract the victims from the wrecked vehicle because of the jammed doors and the fragile condition of the passengers.
