Ceres-Negros on to finals
Ceres-Negros suffered a 3-2 loss to Yangon United in the second leg of their semifinal tie Wednesday in Yangon but still advanced to the ASEAN zonal finals of the AFC Cup after prevailing 6-5 on aggregate.
The Busmen, who claimed a 4-2 win in last week’s first leg in Bacolod City, nearly lost their lead as Spanish striker Bienvenido Maranon was booked a straight red in the 81st minute while allowing Yangon to score twice.
But the defending Philippines Football League champion held on to the lead until the final whistle to arrange a rematch with Singapore’s Home United for the ASEAN crown of the continental competition.
Ceres and Home United will meet in a two-legged final in late-July, with the Busmen looking to repeat last year’s dramatic 3-2 victory over the Singaporean side.
Home United reached the ASEAN zonal finals after beating Indonesia’s Persija Jakarta, 6-3, on aggregate.
Yangon gave Ceres a scare after Kousuke Yamazaki Uchida scored after the opening whistle, only to see midfielder Manny Ott cancel out that opener.
