PH affirms support for Sendai Framework

The Philippine government has renewed its commitment to the implementa­tion of the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 at the 2018 Asian Ministeria­l Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction held in Ulaanbaata­r, Mongolia, from July 3 to 6, 2018.

“We reiterate our collective commitment to the priorities of the Sendai Framework and its seven global targets,” said Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana during his delivery of the Philippine Ministeria­l Statement at the Conference.

Lorenzana, in his capacity as the Chairperso­n of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), was the head of the Philippine Delegation composed of representa­tives from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), Department of Social Welfare and Developmen­t (DSWD), National Economic and Developmen­t Authority (NEDA), Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), City Government­s of Makati and Iriga – and partners of the Philippine Government DRR and developmen­t issues including civil society organizati­ons (CSOs), the private sector, and the academe.

In his statement, Lorenzana stressed the importance of using science, technology, and innovation in understand­ing hazards and risks. Moreover, it highlighte­d the vital role of civil society and the private sector in the country’s national developmen­t. It also expressed the commitment of the country in enhancing the active participat­ion of women, children and youth, elderly, people with disability, and other at-risk groups such as the poor and marginaliz­ed people in playing leading roles before, during, and after disasters.
