PH affirms support for Sendai Framework
The Philippine government has renewed its commitment to the implementation of the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 at the 2018 Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from July 3 to 6, 2018.
“We reiterate our collective commitment to the priorities of the Sendai Framework and its seven global targets,” said Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana during his delivery of the Philippine Ministerial Statement at the Conference.
Lorenzana, in his capacity as the Chairperson of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), was the head of the Philippine Delegation composed of representatives from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), City Governments of Makati and Iriga – and partners of the Philippine Government DRR and development issues including civil society organizations (CSOs), the private sector, and the academe.
In his statement, Lorenzana stressed the importance of using science, technology, and innovation in understanding hazards and risks. Moreover, it highlighted the vital role of civil society and the private sector in the country’s national development. It also expressed the commitment of the country in enhancing the active participation of women, children and youth, elderly, people with disability, and other at-risk groups such as the poor and marginalized people in playing leading roles before, during, and after disasters.
