Creamline on the brink of a sweep

- By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA

Games Today (Mall of Asia Arena) 10 a.m. – PLDT vs Vice Co (Men’s Third Place) 1:45 p.m. – Pocari-Air Force vs BanKoPerlas (Women’s Third Place) 3:45 p.m. – Creamline vs PayMaya (Women’s Final) 6 p.m. – Cignal vs Air Force (Men’s Final)

Creamline aims to seal its first Premier Volleyball League championship when it battles PayMaya today in Game 2 of the best-of-three finals series in the Reinforced Conference.

The Cool Smashers are determined to display the same intensity that gave them Game 1, 25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 25-19, when they square off with the High Flyers at 3:45 p.m. at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Alyssa Valdez and the rest of the squad are leaving no stone unturned when they gun for a sweep, making sure PayMaya would gain no chance of grabbing the momentum to forge a rubber match.

Valdez will spearhead the Cool Smashers’ attack along with Thai import Kuttika Kaewpin after the duo combined for 37 points last Sunday.

Offensive help will also come from hard-hitting Michele Gumabao and Laura Schaudt.

PayMaya, however, is not giving Creamline anything on a silver platter as it tries to move on from a lackluster performance in Game 1.

Matching Valdez and Kaewpin’s offensive assault will be the High Flyers’ top spikers Tess Rountree and Grethcel Soltones, who conspired for 37 points the last time.

Another interesting matchup will be the battle of versatile setters, Jia Morado for Creamline and Jasmine Nabor for PayMaya.

In Game 1, Morado outplayed Nabor in number of excellent sets, 32-16.

Meanwhile, Air Force seeks to dethrone defending champion Cignal when it clash in Game 2 at 6 p.m.

The Jet Spikers held their composure in the crucial fifth set to take Game 1, 22-25, 25-23, 19-25, 30-28, 15-8.

A win for Air Force will avenge last seasons’ championship loss to Cignal.

Out to lead the Jet Spikers are Bryan Bagunas, Ranran Abdilla and Fauzi Ismail, who will match up with the HD Spikers’ own deadly trio of Marck Espejo, Ysay Marasigan and Rex Intal.
