Sara hints at making a bid for speakership

DAVAO CITY – Saying that her bet for Speaker could later turn out to be “none other than myself,” Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio may have stirred a political tempest that could derail the bid of former Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano and Marinduque Rep. Lord Alan Jay Velasco for the influential top post in the House of Representatives.

“I heard rumors that both Sec. Cayetano and Cong. Velasco are interested in the Speaker position of the House of Representatives. That is all I heard. To end all the loose talk and gossip, my bet for Speaker is none other than myself,” Duterte said.

The statement was posted Friday night in the Facebook chat room of Davao City hall reporters by the city government’s public information office.

It was not immediately known why she had the statement posted.

But it is entirely possible that she could make such a run for the speakership as her brother, former vice mayor Paolo, had already filed his candidacy for representative of the first district of Davao City, while she, herself, had formalized her bid for another term as mayor.

As per election law, the siblings may still exchange posts up to mid-day of election day (May 13, 2019).

If that transpires, Sara could line herself up for a shot at the House speakership, as she is expected to handily win a congressional seat.

Sara had earlier maintained that she was not keen on giving up her bid for another term as Davao City mayor because she wanted to complete bigticket projects that remain unfinished.

She had also shunned calls for her to run as senator, even after she landed in the top five contenders in a recent survey for senatorial candidates.

If her plans to join the House pushes through, this could jeopardize the bids of Cayetano and Velasco to become the next Speaker.

Cayetano had earlier averred that he would seek the speakership post, while no less than President Rodrigo Duterte and Sara, herself, hailed Velasco as the next Speaker in a recent gathering.

President Duterte had earlier disclosed that his daughter had a hand in the ouster of former Speaker and Davao del Norte representative Pantaleon Alvarez, who was eventually replaced by former President and Pampanga representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
