600 kilos ‘dynamited' fish seized at PPC Int'l Airport
About 600 kilograms of assorted “dynamited” fish were intercepted by authorities Monday morning at the cargo area of the Puerto Princesa City International Airport (PPCIA). Operatives of the Fish Inspection and Quarantine Section (FIQS) led by Krismo Alonte of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) found the fish inside 12 styrofoam boxes on September 10. Fish examiner Peter Paul Paalan of the BFAR Provincial Fisheries Office, who conducted an on-the-spot scientific exami- nation, confirmed it was caught through blast fishing. Mario Basaya, BFAR-Palawan head said they turned over the fish to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) as a donation with corresponding acknowledgment receipt. The owner of the illegal cargoes was identified by authorities as Susan Magdatu, who will face charges for violating Section 126 of Republic Act 10654 or the “possessing, dealing in or disposing of illegally caught or taken fish.” Violators face an administrative fine ranging from P50,000 and above, and upon conviction by a court of law, six months to two years of imprisonment.
