The provincial government is exploring potentials for “farm tourism” in Palawan as an additional tourist attraction. Maribel Buñi, Provincial Tourism Promotions and Development Office (PTPDO) said there are already interested individuals who wants to venture into farm tourism in the province. “‘ Yong posibilidad na magkaroon tayo ng mga farm tourism sites ay malaking posibilidad given that Palawan is basically agricultural,” she said. Buñi said farm tourism is the new way of inviting tourists to experience the communities and learn about the traditional way of life of residents. “Pwedeng ‘yung farm mismo is an attraction at p’wede ring may activities like ‘yong mga pick and pay, or pwede silang mag-offer ng food, services, and amenities, as well as other resources to promote cultural heritage and tradition,” Buñi said. In experiencing farm tourism, she said, all the five senses are engaged that tourists will like. It will also help provide addition- al income to farm owners and the communities, she said. The PTPDO is now conducting an assessment and validation of potential farm tourism sites in the province. “May mga na-identify na tayo na Agricultural Training Institute (ATI)-accredited at Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA)-accredited as learning schools tapos ina-assess natin kung pwede silang ma-accredit as farm tourism. Pero hindi ibig sabihin na if you are not ATI or TESDA-accredited hindi ka na pwedeng maging farm tourism site,” she said. Buñi said her office is also preparing programs to help farmers in case they decide to turn their farms into tourism sites. As the “World’s Best Island,” the province should embrace the potential of its agricultural industry that offer outdoor educational and recreational activities for tourists, she pointed out. “Ang tourism natin should not only focus on the beach para ma-diversify ‘yung product. Kasi kapag diversified ang [tourism] products mo mas marami silang pupuntahan,” she said. Farm tourism is supported by the implementation of Republic Act 10816 or the Farm Tourism Development Act of 2016, Buñi said.

The Palawan government is currently exploring the possibility of venturing into “Farm Tourism” to provide additional livelihood to farmers and to attract tourists who prefer experiencing community life.
