Be environment compliant, DENR urges El Nido officials, residents
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) regional office has challenged residents and municipal government officials of El Nido to comply with environmental laws to prevent a scenario like Boracay. “All these things that your local chief executive is implementing now are part of following the mandate of our national laws, so kailangan sundin ninyo po ‘ yan upang hindi kayo matulad sa Boracay,” Henry Adornado, DENR-MIMAROPA regional director said. Adornado issued the challenge during the culmination of the month-long celebration of the 20th year of existence of the El Nido-Taytay Managed Resource Protected Area (ENTMRPA) on Tuesday, October 30. Adornado cited the efforts of El Nido Mayor Nieves Rosento to safeguard the environment of El Nido. “Atin pong dadalhin at ipapaalam sa nasyunal ang inyong mga magagandang programa at ginagawa dito para sa kalikasan,” Adornado said. Earlier, Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat chided El Nido officials for not replying to the two letters she sent calling their attention to enforce sustainable tourism laws and the easement zone clean-up. Rosento said they are doing their best to comply with the easement zone policy, the local ordinance against single-use plastics, and the strict monitoring against tour boats that discard waste materials into the sea. While she admitted having difficulty to implement some environmental policies, Rosento reminded tour boat operators, travel and tour agencies, the business sector, and other stakeholders that they have the “shared responsibility” to call the attention of their staff and personnel against ocean waste dumping that could ruin El Nido’s terrestrial and marine environments. “Hindi sapat ang ating mga ginagawa, we need more shared values. Ibalik natin ang ating bayanihan system upang magawa natin ang mga tamang paraan [nang pag-iingat] sa kalikasan,” she said.
