DA to farmers: Use gov’t loans
BACOLOD City - The Department of Agriculture (DA) urged farmers and fisherfolk in Negros Island Region (NIR) to utilize various credit assistance programs like loans from the agency to achieve agricultural productivity.
Joyce Wendam, regional director of DA-NIR, said Monday they recognized the need for farmers and fisherfolk to have capitalization support to sustain their production especially during threats brought by calamities.
Wenda ms aid farm and fishery loans from the government help recipient- farmers fund their farm input expenses like seeds and fertilizers.
“Some farmers incur bigger debts when they acquire loans from private entity with higher interest rates thus, agricultural productivity is affected,” the DA official said, adding that “this results to bigger production costs yet lower income.”
Aside from the Survival and Recovery (Sure) Loan Program currently providing P10,000 grant and P20,000 loan to calamity- affected farmers in the country including Negros, the DA is also set to launch its Production Loan Easy Access (PLEA) program next month.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol had earlier said the DA had included in its proposed 2018 annual budget some P50 billion which would be used as seed fund for an easy access loaning program aimed at improving farmers and fisherfolk’s production.
