DA to farm­ers: Use gov’t loans


BACOLOD City - The Depart­ment of Agri­cul­ture (DA) urged farm­ers and fish­er­folk in Ne­gros Is­land Re­gion (NIR) to utilize var­i­ous credit as­sis­tance pro­grams like loans from the agency to achieve agri­cul­tural pro­duc­tiv­ity.

Joyce Wen­dam, re­gional di­rec­tor of DA-NIR, said Mon­day they rec­og­nized the need for farm­ers and fish­er­folk to have cap­i­tal­iza­tion sup­port to sus­tain their pro­duc­tion es­pe­cially dur­ing threats brought by calami­ties.

Wenda ms aid farm and fish­ery loans from the govern­ment help re­cip­i­ent- farm­ers fund their farm in­put ex­penses like seeds and fer­til­iz­ers.

“Some farm­ers in­cur big­ger debts when they ac­quire loans from pri­vate en­tity with higher in­ter­est rates thus, agri­cul­tural pro­duc­tiv­ity is af­fected,” the DA of­fi­cial said, adding that “this re­sults to big­ger pro­duc­tion costs yet lower in­come.”

Aside from the Sur­vival and Re­cov­ery (Sure) Loan Pro­gram cur­rently pro­vid­ing P10,000 grant and P20,000 loan to calamity- af­fected farm­ers in the coun­try in­clud­ing Ne­gros, the DA is also set to launch its Pro­duc­tion Loan Easy Ac­cess (PLEA) pro­gram next month.

Agri­cul­ture Sec­re­tary Em­manuel Piñol had ear­lier said the DA had in­cluded in its pro­posed 2018 an­nual bud­get some P50 bil­lion which would be used as seed fund for an easy ac­cess loan­ing pro­gram aimed at im­prov­ing farm­ers and fish­er­folk’s pro­duc­tion.
