GM Sa­muel Shank­land (2676) and In­dian GM Kr­ish­nan Sasiki­ran (2669) are off to an early lead at the pres­ti­gious Elite Di­vi­sion of the 52nd Ca­pablanca Me­mo­rial that started May 26 at the Ho­tel Barcelo Soly­mar Are­nas Blan­cas in Matan­zas, Cuba.

Af­ter three rounds of the 6-player, dou­ble round-robin Cat­e­gory 17 ( av­er­age Elo: 2656) event, both Shank­land and Sasiki­ran have amassed 2 points apiece. Shar­ing third to fifth places with 1½ points apiece are top seed Ukrainian GM Vass­ily I vanchuk, Peru­vian GM Emilio Cor­dova (2645) and Cuban GM Isan Rey­naldo Or­tiz Suarez (2570). Emerg­ing last in the stand­ings and fast be­com­ing the prospec­tive whip­ping boy of the tour­na­ment is Poland GM Kacper Piorun ( 2638), who has suf­fered two losses in three out­ings so far.

The tour­na­ment is in honor of Jose Raul Ca­pablanca ( Nov. 19 1888 – March 8, 1942), a Cuban chess player who was world chess cham­pion from 1921 to 1927.
