Shankland, Sasikiran off to early 52nd Capablanca Memorial lead
GM Samuel Shankland (2676) and Indian GM Krishnan Sasikiran (2669) are off to an early lead at the prestigious Elite Division of the 52nd Capablanca Memorial that started May 26 at the Hotel Barcelo Solymar Arenas Blancas in Matanzas, Cuba.
After three rounds of the 6-player, double round-robin Category 17 ( average Elo: 2656) event, both Shankland and Sasikiran have amassed 2 points apiece. Sharing third to fifth places with 1½ points apiece are top seed Ukrainian GM Vassily I vanchuk, Peruvian GM Emilio Cordova (2645) and Cuban GM Isan Reynaldo Ortiz Suarez (2570). Emerging last in the standings and fast becoming the prospective whipping boy of the tournament is Poland GM Kacper Piorun ( 2638), who has suffered two losses in three outings so far.
The tournament is in honor of Jose Raul Capablanca ( Nov. 19 1888 – March 8, 1942), a Cuban chess player who was world chess champion from 1921 to 1927.
