Our love for basketball: Laban Pilipinas, Puso!

Panay News - - WORLD - By Ron Rick D. Deluna, Pontevedra Christian School

FILIPINOS are a basketball- loving people. To them, basketball is not just an ordinary sport; it is a way of life.

While other countries love watching and playing soccer (which is actually the world’s most popular and No. 1 sport), basketball has always been the closest sport to the Filipino heart. The Filipinos’ passion for basketball has historical and cultural roots and whatever happens to the games of our favorite basketball teams in tournaments like the Philippine Basketball Association, International Federation of Basketball, Jones Cup, Southeast Asian Games and even Olympics will do nothing to change that.

There are many reasons why Filipinos love basketball. Some of those may seem fictional, others may sound romantic and some logical. We may be shorter in height but we have the HEART. This is probably the most logical answer Filipinos could give in defending their love for basketball.

In basketball, height and bulk are important. Filipinos are comparatively shorter and built smaller, thinner and lighter than most other people in the world. But we like the idea of always being the underdog. We savor inexplicable triumph in working hard to reach the top from the bottom.

We know we don’t have the height advantage so we set ourselves playing emotional basketball where effort, determination, dedication, passion, and hard work prevail. This is why we have this famous battle cry for our Gilas national basketball team –
