DECORATIVE DETAILS FOR YOUR LIVING SPACE

- By Din M. Villafuerte @dinmveeINQ

John Lubbock, author of “The Pleasures of Life,” wrote: “Art is unquestionably one of the purest and highest elements in human happiness. It trains the mind through the eye, and the eye through the mind. As the sun colors flowers, so does art color life.”

Art, in whatever form, is important in our everyday lives. Whether it is a painting, a photograph or a sculpture, it does not only stir inspiration and creativity in us—it also gives character to our living spaces and make these come alive.

Contrary to popular notion, decorating your house or condominium unit with art does not have to break the bank.

You can scour weekend bazaars for unique art prints or crafts which are, aside from being pleasing to the eyes, easy on the pocket. A number of home shops also offer decorative pieces that can spruce up your home or space in a snap.

Paintings

A painting is one obvious choice for those who wish to introduce some art into their homes. It easily makes an otherwise boring wall attractive. Plus these are also easy to install.

From abstract art to portraits, still life and pop art, there is a painting that calls out to everyone of us. You can also hang one in every room: the living room above the couch, over your headboard in the bedroom, and even the bathroom so you’ll have something to admire while you’re doing your, uh, business.

Sculptures

Fill in the empty spaces on your shelves with small sculptures. You may also have them as centerpieces on your coffee table.

If you want a cohesive look, pick those that have one thing in common. For instance, get plain, white ceramic ones if you are leaning towards a simple but classic theme. Or if you love dogs, you might like to start a collection of dog sculptures.

Functional art

Functional art refers to aesthetic objects that serve another useful purpose. Consider, for instance, this vintage bicycle wall mount that can double as a flower holder. Aside from adding flair to your home, it also makes an interesting conversational piece. Or make every day Valentine’s Day with this “Love” wall decor that also serves a clock and a photo frame.

Wilcon Depot, the country’s one-stop shop for your building and home improvement needs, offers a wide and varied selection of pieces for you who’s considering to have pieces of art in your home. From paintings to small decorative items ideas, visit its website, wilcon.com.ph.
